Monheim, May 17, 2019 – Bayer has joined the 14th IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) International Congress of Crop Protection, the world’s leading event in that field, as one of the main sponsors. About 1,500 crop health specialists are expected to participate at the event in Ghent, Belgium, from May 19 to 24, 2019. Amongst them are world-renowned speakers, academia, experts from the industry, policymakers and other stakeholders.
In different panels, the experts will discuss ideas for modern crop protection, which is still largely depending on the judicious application of agrochemicals to control invertebrate pests such as insects, mites and nematodes, and weeds and diseases. Bayer will sponsor one of the panels focusing on the availability of chemical classes with different modes of action (MoAs).
“It is of utmost importance to design sustainable resistance management strategies,” says Dr. Ralf Nauen, Chief Scientist working on Resistance Management at Crop Science, a division of Bayer.
New legislation has continued to put pressure on the crop protection portfolio in some regions of the world, making the development, registration and commercialization of new solutions more crucial today. In addition, if resistance evolves, the understanding of molecular and genetic mechanisms are important to understand cross-resistance issues in order to implement appropriate resistance management tactics to protect fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and also nematicides.
The field has recently gained momentum through a number of genomic and genetic tools that have allowed dissecting molecular interactions between agrochemicals and interacting proteins, a key topic of this session. Nauen, who is the international lead for the panel, will also present a paper on the bee safety of flupyradifurone (Sivanto™), a modern insecticide from Bayer with an excellent safety profile for the control of major sucking pests.

Visitors and attending journalists are also invited to meet Bayer at booth 58 in the exhibition hall, where experts will inform about the concept of Tailored Agronomic Solutions, using the latest innovations in chemical and biological crop protection. Visitors can also go on a virtual tour of the Bayer ForwardFarm near Brussels to learn more about state-of-the-art agronomic solutions. The nearby ForwardFarm is a platform to illustrate the commitments of Bayer to both innovation and sustainability.
